02.02.2013 (Saturday). I spent a very bad night (fever, coughing,
...). I feel a little bit better as I get up. Let's see if it will really
improve (formerly contaminated colleagues had up and down). Anyway it is better
to get sick now when there is very little work for us,
than during the next benthic stations, where we will probably have to work day
and night. Let's hope that Marie will not be contaminated at that time, but I
am optimistic and think that she has a good immunity. We continue the
identification of the amphipods of our first samples. Since we have a lot of
time, We really go thoroughly through them and try to identify tiny bugs, which
otherwise would have just been put into a glass laconically labelled "left
over". In the afternoon, I am coughing horribly and still feel very
weakened but I think I have no more fever. 18:30: Through a hole in the cloudy
cap, which retained us prisoners for days, the sun is suddenly shining on the
ice. On the bridge they have put a screen of semi-transparent plactic sheets to
protect the pilot against the blinding reflection of the sun on the snow.
View on ice from our lab.

Identifications again. The days are
quite similar for the moment, but I don’t mind yet. We can work quietly and
enjoy the beautiful landscapes. End afternoon, we gather on the deck. The
weather is great. The few clouds remaining are soon blown up by the wind,
leaving a whole blue sky. I stay almost an hour outside. After that, we have
some presentations about our respective programs for the expedition, our work
and goals. 2 or 3 people are doing short speaks every evening. And it’s always
interesting to learn about other Antarctic organisms and fields of study.
